Randy Klein is perhaps best known for his large scale public art sculptures. Recently Klein has explored the language of paint to both capture and express his interest in landscape and place. Working in enamels on aluminum, these large-scale paintings are fresh and direct and his images offer a very contemporary vision of landscape.
The use of colour and pattern as a means to both disguise and reveal, as well as the notions of metamorphoses and transformation are key influences in Klein’s work. His paintings lie somewhere between abstract and figurative, capturing the beauty of landscape in a unique, painterly language. He has found the pastoral not just in the natural environment of the countryside, but also right in the middle of London.
New York born Klein has been living for part of the year in the Italian countryside. After spending his life in cities, he has now rediscovered landscape through the eyes of the city dweller.
The emotional and expressive vision of the natural beauty of Italy has been carried to his images of London, and the result is work that shows a pastoral side of London with an unexpected resonance with the hills of Tuscany.
