Londonessence: Adoration at Gallery@OXO: Ed Gray

24 - 28 September 2014

Londonessence: Adoration is a new exhibition of works by London artist Ed Gray, inspired by 16th Century Renaissance paintings from the National Gallery. The exhibition explores Gray’s adoration of London and his search for its essence through the spirit of Londoners

These gritty everyday London figurative scenes of adoring football fans on matchdays and commuters in tube stations draw the viewer in to look for the extraordinary within the ordinary. Each painting is filled with real people sketched from the streets of the city and suffused with cultural references, myths and heartfelt human emotion.
‘The real magic of Ed Gray’s work is that he doesn’t seek to tame the city. Ed’s art doesn’t freeze the teeming streets, but unleashes all their kinetic wonder. These are not still lives, but motion pictures. And if Ed paints movies, to me they are musicals; buzzing with jazz and the glorious accidental choreography of crowds’. Robert Elms
