Description: Carlos Cortes goes back to basics in this exhibition. He steps back in time after a period of more realistic characters, large and structurally complex works, and some intensely dramatic contents.
His left-hand drawings are in charge again, leading the way in a quest for simplicity that seems so suited for our difficult times.
Men with flowers, toy-like cars and colourful birdhouses share the stage with his ironic versions of classical masters and even with some contemporary “guest celebrities”.
His bold colours, delicate trace and subtle glazing technique produce a jewel-like quality that is sometimes even more apparent in his smallest pieces. These qualities, together with his sense of humour and the truly empathetic expressions of his characters, make his work instantly recognizable in an increasingly uniform world.
This exhibition is a rare opportunity to peer into the realm of a unique artist.
