  Carlos Cortes

Artist information

Name: Carlos Cortes
Genres: -
Year of Birth:
1964
Nationality:
Spanish, based in London

Artist statement:
Painting, photography, theatre design, dance and performance all fuel the multidisciplinary work of Carlos Cortes. His many uses of found objects create exciting and dynamic interpretations of humanity: the relationship between people, their activities and the spaces they inhabit, the objects they use and the traces they leave. He does this from a very personal perspective, combining surreal interpretations with an honest portrayal of other people's lives.

Cortés has clearly defined his own creative method and style. His work challenges the viewer’s understanding of familiar objects, myths and ideas, and encourages participation by inviting storytelling and questioning. From these objects, his work receives immediate and inherent narratives which inform his pieces.

Since the 1980’s, Cortes has exhibited and performed extensively in the UK and across Europe. His paintings can also be found in private collections in USA and New Zealand.
