This annual exhibition showcases work by established artists alongside new contemporary portrait painters selected from open submission. Work on show is diverse in medium but with a strong focus on drawing and character, promoting excellence in the field and offering several high profile prizes. The exhibition is also a perfect opportunity to research commissioning a portrait. This year’s show includes special mini-exhibition to commemorate HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Times wrote:

“Of the country’s two major annual portrait exhibitions, the BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery in June might be better known, but the one at the Royal Society is surely the more glittering, as it is to the society that many of the country’s powerful institutions go to commission portraits of their leaders.”

Over 200 portraits by 100 artists will be hung in this exhibition which is one of the year’s top art events.

The exhibition of prints will also feature some of the original sketches Gray made of people in the streets of Mexico during his stay there.

‘ Tom Bloom’s beautiful Mexican shop in Bristol was the first place I remember encountering Mexican culture in the 1990′s and it sparked a desire to learn more. This passion created the dream that lead to move my studio to Mexico for 6 months to see if I could capture street life in Mexico in the same way I have been depicting London life for so many years.’ Ed Gray

Randy Klein is working with architects Peter Barber, the foundation for the sculpture has started, planning permission has been granted, and completion date is scheduled for mid June 2012. There will be a big launch of the sculpture and the Employment Academy in the autumn, with celebrity supporters and government ministers in attendance. The sculpture is based around a spiral staircase, and is 5 meters high. More info click here.
