Carlos Cortes is a modern day renaissance man. His work has international acclaim and spans from painting, to sculpture, installation, theatre design, dance, photography and performance. This exhibition focuses on paintings and sculpture.
‘In the Night Garden’ is the collective result of the time he has spent earlier this year in his studio in the hills of sunny Andalucia. Bright and colourful Cortes’ paintings take us to a brave new world, full of frivolity, comedy and humour. This exhibition is a diary of the artist’s journey, as he goes deeper and further into the ‘Night Garden’ a ficticious land where his characters come to life on the found objects he sources and then paints.
Cortes unique iconography makes his work clearly distinctive. His sytle is of a self taught outsider artist, further acentuated by his method of painting with his un-natural hand which he says allows him to reach further in the sub-concious. Cow-boys and gangsters, pilots and saints share a similar fate, becoming allegorical characters that inhabit private worlds full of toy cars, architectural follies and strange contraptions. His technique uses layers and layers of very thin oil to render unique expressions and striking and colourful outfits. Illuminated by a strange light, his characters appear have a darkly humerous and archly ironic air. Click here to view the artists portfolio.
Carlos Cortes has carried out projects and commissions for venues and festivals such as the Hayward Gallery (London), Turner Contemporary (Margate), Firstsite (Colchester), Kew Gardens (London), Oryel Mostyn (Llandudno), Royal Academy of Arts (Edinburgh), Galleri (Carmarthen), Strange creatures Festival (Hertogenbosch- Holland), Time and Space (Paide-Estonia), Festival Periferias (Huesca, Sp), Madrid Dance Marathon (Madrid,Sp), Festival de Valderrobres (Teruel, Sp), Trayectos Zaragoza (Zaragoza, Sp), CDAN -Centro de Arte y Naturaleza- (Huesca Sp), Centro de Historia de Zaragoza (Spain).
